Understanding the coast of Belgium
This guide explains the coast of Belgium on the North Sea; calculations, observations and product limits remain distinct.
Read a local tide
Times and heights depend on the port, datum and station timezone. Belgium’s coast is short, but station references, times and levels still matter. A value published for one North Sea point is not an average for the whole coast. Note the station and time before relating a prediction to the place you plan to visit. A value from another place cannot be carried to a nearby beach. Mareloa preserves the source and timestamp of its data but does not replace the national hydrographic reference.
Tidal range and coast
Tidal range depends on the North Sea tide, local geometry and conditions superimposed on the cycle. It does not by itself describe a bathing area, access point or walk. Use level information with its place and its validity period. Tidal range is the vertical difference between low and high water. Bays, depth and coastal shape change it, so one astronomical cycle does not create the same range everywhere. Mareloa creates no national coefficient for Belgium and infers no access from one number.
Prediction, model and observation
Water levels published by Flemish services are not interchangeable with an astronomical table. An observation belongs to a sensor and time; wind and pressure can explain its difference from a prediction. Retain that distinction when reading both products. An astronomical prediction calculates a periodic component. A model adds assumptions; an observation is a measurement at a station and time. Wind, pressure, waves and geography can change actual level. These categories remain separate and missing evidence never becomes reassuring.
Plan a coast visit
Before a visit, beach rules, water-quality notices and local signs take precedence over a tide reading. Check municipal and competent-authority publications for the relevant day. The guide does not turn a level datum into advice about bathing or access. Use this guide to understand provenance, not to decide an activity. Restrictions, health notices, access and signage are local and can change. Consult the competent authority and on-site information; Mareloa is not a navigation tool.
