Understanding the coast of Denmark
This guide explains the coast of Denmark on the North Sea, the Baltic Sea; calculations, observations and product limits remain distinct.
Read a local tide
Denmark’s coasts face the North Sea, Skagerrak, Kattegat and Baltic. DMI gives both LAT and MSL in its products; read that reference with place and time. A level in one datum cannot be directly compared with another without the required conversion.
Tidal range and coast
The tide is not uniform from the exposed west coast to inland waters. Local forms, currents and coastal geometry alter the visible difference between high and low water. Do not use one national range as a measure of access to a particular beach or harbour.
Prediction, model and observation
DMI separates astronomical tide from measured water level. Weather can shift actual water level, while a measurement describes only its station and time. Keep the two tracks separate, and use timestamp and reference before interpreting a difference.
Plan a coast visit
Bathing, fishing, nature protection and access depend on the particular place. Look for authority notices, local rules and signs before visiting sea or fjord. The guide gathers explanations and sources, but does not issue permission.
