This guide explains the coast of France on the English Channel, the Atlantic, the Mediterranean; calculations, observations and product limits remain distinct.
Read a local tide
Times and heights depend on the port, datum and station timezone. From the Channel to the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, always choose a port and its legal time. The French coefficient, calculated in Brest, describes a tidal context; it gives neither a height in Marseille nor the time at a Cotentin beach. Local directories help find a place, not transfer a value between coasts. A value from another place cannot be carried to a nearby beach. Mareloa preserves the source and timestamp of its data but does not replace the national hydrographic reference.
Tidal range and coast
Channel bays can concentrate tidal range, while the Mediterranean often has a subtler tide. This difference in coastal geometry is why one coefficient cannot prepare a visit. Find the times and heights for the reference port before comparing two sectors. Tidal range is the vertical difference between low and high water. Bays, depth and coastal shape change it, so one astronomical cycle does not create the same range everywhere. Mareloa creates no national coefficient for France and infers no access from one number.
Prediction, model and observation
A tide table is an astronomical prediction. Wind, pressure and sea state can change the observed level through effects not described by the astronomical table. Keep the published schedule, any measurement and local notices separate; missing information remains unknown. An astronomical prediction calculates a periodic component. A model adds assumptions; an observation is a measurement at a station and time. Wind, pressure, waves and geography can change actual level. These categories remain separate and missing evidence never becomes reassuring.
Plan a coast visit
For bathing, shore gathering or a walk on the foreshore, access, orders, shellfish areas and health notices depend on municipality and season. Consult the competent authority, site signs and local information before leaving. This guide does not decide that an activity is allowed or suitable for the day’s conditions.
