Understanding the coast of Iceland
This guide explains the coast of Iceland on the Atlantic, the Arctic; calculations, observations and product limits remain distinct.
Read a local tide
Times and heights depend on the port, datum and station timezone. Iceland has an open Atlantic coast and fjords where station and datum matter. A sea-level series from one station is an observation at that place, not a prediction for the whole coast. Keep place, time zone and datum with a table or measurement. A value from another place cannot be carried to a nearby beach. Mareloa preserves the source and timestamp of its data but does not replace the national hydrographic reference.
Tidal range and coast
A fjord, bay and open coast can respond differently to tide and weather. A range from one place does not describe access to another foreshore or harbour. Use a local source as a starting point, not as a national average. Tidal range is the vertical difference between low and high water. Bays, depth and coastal shape change it, so one astronomical cycle does not create the same range everywhere. Mareloa creates no national coefficient for Iceland and infers no access from one number.
Prediction, model and observation
A prediction calculates the periodic component; an observation reports a measurement at a particular time. Wind, air pressure and waves can change the actual coastal level. Compare only data with a clear source and time, and leave uncertainty visible. An astronomical prediction calculates a periodic component. These categories remain separate and missing evidence never becomes reassuring.
Plan a coast visit
Access, signs, weather warnings and nature or fishing rules are local matters. Check the competent authorities and conditions on site before going to sea or shore.
