A baïne is a hollow in the sand filled with water that can create a current pulling out to sea: even a strong swimmer cannot fight it. Reflex: swim parallel to the shore to get out of it, never straight against it.

A sandbank can look stable and then be surrounded by the sea within minutes: between 1 May and 1 August 2025, CROSS Gris-Nez recorded 38 people cut off by the tide, notably around the Somme bay.
