These photographs were taken in Barra Velha, on the coast of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, around Praia Central and its traditional artisanal fishing area. Fishing has been closely connected to the development of the town since the 19th century, when coastal communities established themselves in the region and relied heavily on the sea for their livelihood. Today, small boats, fishing activity, and the daily work of local fishermen remain visible parts of Barra Velha’s cultural landscape and historical identity. The fisher separating fished according to species to sell right fresh in the morning there in the beach.
